Saturday 9: Happy Turkey Day 2010
1. Tell us about your very favorite (yes we know that's redundant) Thanksgiving.
In 1977, just before I left to live in Florida, I was dating a submarine sailor who's ship was stationed in my hometown. He was distraught because he had duty on T Day and could not be home with his family. They were having a dinner on the ship for all the sailors stuck on duty and allowed them to bring a guest.
I decided to forsake my family meal and eat my Thanksgiving dinner on a submarine, It was one of the most delicious I have ever eaten (Sub food is apparently known to be great), but the coolest part was he was so proud and happy introducing me to all the other guys and their girlfriends/wives, he forgot how homesick he was. It was the most unique Thanksgiving I have ever had, and one of the most gratifying.
2. What are you doing for Turkey Day this year?
Dinner out in a fancy restaurant with Bud some of his family. I'm looking forward to it.
3. If you were to go to somebody else’s house, what would be your favorite dish to bring?
Dessert! I love to bake. : )
4. Tell us about the funniest person that you'll be with this Thanksgiving.
Are you kidding?!
5. What would surprise us to know about your Thanksgivings?
I hate being around noisy children and usually dislike forced family activities.
6. Does your usual mix of guests result in drama, or is it a group you’re happy to see?
It is lacklustre, but this year's should be good.
7. What did your family do for Thanksgiving when you were a kid? Do you still do it?
My mother spent like 2 weeks preparing for this one day's meal. We broke out the fancy china dishes we never ate on except Easter, Xmas and Thanksgiving, with interesting crystal dishes made just for things like pickles, the gravy boat, special spoons ... She got up at 6am to start the cooking process. My father had a highball (alcohol drink) with dinner instead of milk.
Dinner itself would be eaten in the flouescently lit tiny kitchen in silence (no conversation). Well, we did get the pleasure of viewing and hearing my father's open-mouth chewing...and would be over in about 15 minutes.
I would watch the Parade with my father and siblings after the last bite of pumpkin pie, while my mother then spent like 2 hours cleaning up. It was nothing I made my personal goals on. If anything, it turned me off of ever wanting to grow up and get married.
8. We know you've been asked this probably 15 times this week. But share with us in 2010, what are you most thankful for?
This year? Bud.
9. Okay, the big question: are you going to 'attend' any of the "Black Friday" sales? ...and if you are, are you hard core serious like the 5 am "be there" crowd?
I am still not sure if my office is open. I don't get up at 5:00am for shopping, tho I have in the past...In the future, I'd like to get 3 other gals to go in with me to rent a limo, drop us off in front of our fav shops, then go to a nice lunch with cocktails after. Not this year however. ;-)
So are you gonna get up early and cook all day?
ReplyDeleteWhat's he asking that for? I thought he was taking you out. Did you hear about the woman who stayed at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago? She was an exhibit for a month. She said one of the funnest things she did was go eat and sleep on the submarine there (captured German WWII). True story. Great museum too :)
